Hygienist visit

Seeing the hygienist regularly is a vital part of taking the best possible care of your teeth and gums. They play a key role in helping you to maintain a healthy mouth, avoiding problems such as decay and gum disease (the biggest cause of tooth loss in adults).

Gum disease often goes unnoticed because it is generally painless, but over time it can cause lasting damage. With a good oral healthcare routine and regular visits to the hygienist its progress can be significantly slowed down or even stopped.

During your visit to the hygienist your teeth will be cleaned professionally, removing any plaque (a constantly-forming layer of sticky bacteria which causes gum disease) and your teeth will be left fresh and clean.

The hygienist can also advise you on the best way to care for your teeth and gums, including an effective daily cleaning routine and following a healthy diet.

For those with more advanced gum disease (periodontitis) they are able to carry out a personalised treatment programme to help bring it back under control.

At Emstrey Dental Practice in Shrewsbury we love to see patients of all ages. We offer advice and guidance to our younger patients to encourage them to have a happy healthy mouth for the rest of their lives.

We’ve all gone through our teens and know how this can be a busy period but a vital time to instil techniques and chat about the importance of good brushing especially if there is a brace involved.

Later on in life we all get annoying stains from things like coffee, tea and red wine and some of us can be prone to build up of plaque and calculus which requires removal that only your hygienist can do.

We carry out a full assessment on each patient and then monitor their progression throughout our care.
